Life-altering decisions of the two friends from the Neapolitan novels My Brilliant Friend, Elena Greco and Lila Cerullo, are directly relatable to readers’ personal experiences and the situation of women today. The author, whose identity is shrouded in mystery, describes ambivalence of social snobbery, paradoxes of motherhood, abuse of women, and sexual initiation and education of girls. Elena and Lila‘s friendship and aspirations are driven by their rivalry, struggle for fulfilment of their dreams, and attempts to come to terms with family history.
