A woman feels that time is slowing down. While it is unpleasant, it gives her an opportunity to fully understand what she has. She remembers her friend’s impression when she told her many years ago: “Promise me you will never start going out with him.” When she was fifteen, she was browsing through her mother’s diary in secrecy; and when she closed it, it felt as if it burned her. The birds wave their wings with difficulty. The moon is greasily blurred, a light in a house at the edge of a meadow is shaped like a sharp square. I would like to tell myself that the fear will be gone again, just like almost everything else. The short stories and novels by Judith Hermann capture what we may usually not even notice, but our life is shaped by it: the details of ordinary things, the fleeting moments of meeting other people, the moments of unwitting decisions to remain passive in certain situations. The text of the play represents a collage of her work, and the title references the very first short story from her Summerhouse, later collection.
